Jessica

Rutamu

Hello friends! My name is Jessica and I am the owner of Balayage Portland. To those of you who have been by my side for this 10 year journey, I cannot thank you enough. It is because of your trust and loyalty that I am here fulfilling this dream and have the ability to provide a bright future for my daughter. For those of you who are new, I'd like to extend you the warmest welcome to our space!

After graduating with a degree in Psychology from The University of North Carolina, Wilmington, I was faced with a difficult decision. Forge on to grad school or shift gears and dive into the world of Cosmetology. I had to follow my heart and thus began my humble hair journey.

From hair school, to a lengthy and enriching apprenticeship at Akari, to studying in New York at The House of Bumble, and 10 years of singular focus on my craft, I found my flow and ability to paint beautiful hair. Along the way, I took a leap of faith and became an entrepreneur and shortly after, a mother! Becoming a mother fueled my fire to push through my fear and fulfill my dream of opening a boutique salon. I wanted to give my clients beautiful hair in an environment that made them feel something!

So, here we are, welcome to your new hair home! I hope you feel loved and inspired. I hope we are your temporary refuge in the middle of your hectic week. I hope we can continue to fulfill your hair dreams while sharing in the joy of sisterhood.

Let's continue to celebrate these wins together.

2019 is ours!

Nicky

Couch

Hey beauties my name is Nicky Couch! I grew up in the small town of Rumford, Maine.  From a young age I was inspired by my Memmie who was a professional in the beauty industry. My aspirations to make my own splash in the industry grew from there.

I have been crafting my skills since I was 16 years old, and have had the privilege of turning my passion into a career.  Whether it’s a cut, color, or balayage I got you’re back! I also specialize in weddings and making brides feel stunning on their special day. I work as an independent freelancer as well as alongside Jessica Candage Glam Artist doing weddings all over New England. Even at a young age I feel I have a ton of experience and have worked at many events such as The Meca Fashion show, and the Little Black Dress event to list a few. I also had the opportunity of a lifetime working as a glam artist with high profile models  backstage at the 2018 Miami Fashion Week! I’m always keeping up on the newest trends and striving to give my clients a look they will love!

Kari

Cowperthwaite

Hello there, I'm Kari! I've always known I wanted to do this. I attended Emerson College in Boston right out of high school, but secretly wanted to become a stylist. For me, I knew not only that I wanted to work in a creative field but that creating in a hands-on setting was most fulfilling to me. I decided to go for it in 2010, completed my professional training a year later and never looked back!

Over the years I have been lucky enough to not only to build my career in Portland, a city I love in the state I am from, but also work in New York City, Melbourne, Australia, and New Zealand where I spent years traveling and working. It was incredible to combine styling and travel, my two biggest passions in life. I have a "work hard, play hard" philosophy and when I'm not behind the chair, I'm planning my family's next trip with my fiancé and daughter.

My specialization in hair color means I create a look just for you. I have mastered many techniques including but not limited to baby-fine, delicate foiling, bright blonde, and hand-painted balayage and will often combine different techniques to achieve as subtle or as bold of a look is desired. I welcome all hair textures and enjoy creating any color.

Equally fulfilling to me is styling and makeup. Soft beach-waves and glowy skin make my heart sing. I offer styling services both in the salon and on-location for weddings and photo-shoots.

Joining the team at Balayage Portland is the culmination of nearly a decade experience in this industry. I am thrilled to be able to work amongst stylists I respect in a creative environment. I would love to be your stylist and swap travel tips, laugh about the craziness of parenting little ones or just make you look and feel beautiful!

Marissa

Gould

Hi there! My name is Marissa. I am from Brewer, ME! Throughout the years, I’ve realized my love and passion for beauty. Since I was a little girl, I always knew that I wanted to be a hair stylist. I always thought what a cool job it must be to make girls feel beautiful all day, everyday.

After I graduated from Brewer High School, I started cosmetology school at SpaTech in Westbrook. Following graduation I moved back to Bangor, thinking it would be the easiest way to get a clientele in a town where I was familiar. I started working at Eden Salon in Brewer, where I worked for 3 years! At this salon I was able to gain new skills as well as develop a loyal clientele.

I always knew that I wanted to move back to Portland at some point in my life. It just so happened that I got offered a job at Balayage Portland! I can’t wait to continue doing what I love with this lovely group of ladies. For all of my clients, thank you for being so supportive and following me down to Portland!

If you’re in need of some pampering, then I’m your girl! I specialize in Balayage hair painting for all hair colors. I also enjoy doing hair for weddings, being a part of such a special day is something I look forward to filling my summers with!

With that being said, I am taking all new and old clients! I hope to see you all in my new chair and beautiful salon!

Justina

Lowe

Why hello there! I’m Justina, besides having a strong love for family, food and hair, I am also an athlete-I love a good challenge!

Becoming a hairstylist started as a dream of mine when I was a little girl and for the past 18 years I have been able to live out my dream and passion! My husband and I, along with our 2 children moved here to Maine 2 years ago. I am native to Upstate New York where I’ve had my own business for most of my career. Part of that time we moved to Virginia for 4 years where I also worked in Virginia Beach as a Master Stylist at a spa where I received extensive, continuous training in Bumble & Bumble, Sebastian, Wella, and Graham Webb- for both coloring and cutting techniques. Specializing in all color techniques, I will also provide you with a beautifully, crafted cut!

When I’m behind the chair, I come alive as an artist – it’s truly who I am. I enjoy making those who sit in my chair feel comfortable, beautiful and confident. I am detail-oriented, paying extreme attention to not only to the hair, but to the clients needs as well. Many clients end up becoming great friends. You can relax and trust your hair needs will be met in my hands.

Abbey

Sawyer

Hi there! I’m Abbey and I grew up in Bangor, Maine! I have been doing hair for over 14 years, beginning in my hometown. Four years into my career I decided to get out of my comfort zone and work in New York City at Dramatics NYC for 2 years. Doing so taught me more than I could ever imagine.  I learned how much I love blow outs and specializing in cuts and color. I also spend most of my weekends on-site from May-October doing wedding hair and makeup!

Making people feel beautiful is not only my job, but my passion. I’m always open to a new opportunity and believe that you should never stop learning or growing in any career.  I have experience in so many different styles whether that be long, beachy hair with balayage, a textured bob, or a short pixie.  I’ve worked with many color lines including Pulpriot, Matrix, Wella, Schwarzkopf, Redken, and Kenra. Taking your inspiration photos and creating a style that will work for you is one of the most satisfying things I can do!  I can’t wait to meet you and make your hair goals a reality. <3
